"George W. Walters was born May 30, 1859 at Monroe, WI, son of John Walters (born Aug. 6, 1805 in PA--died July 1880 in IA ) and Susanne Procious (born Sept. 10, 1813--lived in PA-- died Sept. 21, 1871 at Monroe, WI). John had been a river boat captain when they lived in PA. His wife Susanne's father was French. They migrated to Wisconsin and took up land. John and his oldest boys built a barn in exchange for supplies for his family. George was born when his mother was 46 and she died while he was quite young. When he was 14, his father remarried--a widow with boys of her own. She told George that he had to leave, so he went to live with his oldest brother Oliver. George came to MI when he was 17, driving a team of horses and a wagon. He spoke of driving through the Loop in Chicago. In MI he worked in the woods, lumbering. The pine forests were heavy in MI then. He loved to play the "fiddle" and played for dances. He married Katherine Frost, whose parents were farmers near Merill. When he was 21, she died in childbirth, leaving a daughter Katherine, whom her grandmother raised. He married again at 24, Euphemia Jeanette Harn of Merrill. They settled on a farm near there.
