Born in Muskogee, Oklahoma, he was the son of Harlan and Alta (Best) Ellis. He served in the United States Air Force. A resident of McAlester, Oklahoma, he died at the age of 68 at the Muskogee Veterans Center. He was ordained to preach in 1975 by Immanuel Baptist Church of Wagoner. He had pastored churches throughout Eastern Oklahoma and was interim Pastor of Haileyville Baptist Church. He married Elizabeth Lynch of Muskogee in 1952. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Lorraine Ellis Beard.
