Dr. Hoffman received her Bachelor of Arts (English) in 1947 from Blue Mountain College, MS, and completed her training as a Registered Nurse at Southern Baptist Hospital School of Nursing, LA in 1951. She subsequently attended Tulane University, LA, where she received the degrees Bachelor of Science in Nursing (1954), Doctor of Medicine (1958) and Master of Medical Science (1965).
She was a member of the faculty of Tulane University Medical School from 1965 to 1977, where she did research in Human Genetics and served as Director of the Student Health Service. In 1977, she moved to the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, where she served as Staff Physician until her retirement from the practice of medicine in 1988. She was an active member of Grey Stone Church for 32 years and was a member of the Senior Choir. Following her retirement, she devoted time to interests she had always loved: music, painting, sewing and gardening.
Dr. Hoffman is survived by her son, David Hoffman (Esther), five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren, two sisters, Ernestine Heflin and Joann Poole, and thirteen nieces and nephews.
Burial with a graveside service will be held at Maplewood Cemetery on Saturday, Sept 12, at 10:30 AM. Face coverings and social distancing are required.
