Colonel Edward Y. Holt Jr., USMC (Retired), died at the age of 93 in Norlolk, VA, where he had resided since 1991. Ted grew up in Dallas, TX, the son of Edward Young and Margaret Skillman Holt. He attended Virginia Military Institute for a year, and in 1943 enlisted in the U. S. Marine Corps and attended Cornell University. In 1944 Ted was appointed to the U. S. Naval Academy and graduated with the Class of 1948. Upon graduation he chose the Marine Corps and completed the Basic School at Quantico, Virginia. His initial assignment in 1948 was 1st Provisional Marine Brigade on Guam as a platoon commander and company executive officer, Charlie and Hotel compainies, 3rd Battalion, Fifth Marines.
In 1952 he participated in combat operations in Korea as a platoon commander, executive officer and company commander with Company I, 3/5 Marines. At Outpost Bruce, 4-7 September his company defended against infantry and artillery attacks with 3 of his men being awarded the Medal of Honor.
Ted returned to the Naval Academy in 1955, serving as Company Officer until 1958. From 1959 to 1962 he served as administrative assistant to the Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps. During this tour he met and married Erline Perry in June 1962.
In 1963 he returned to 3/5 Marines as S-3 and then executive officer. He then earned his MBA degree and MS degree in International Affairs from George Washington University. In 1970 Colonel Holt served as the Deputy Secretary, Joint Staff, Headquarters, U.S. Military Assistance Command Vietnam. His final assignment, from 1972 to 1975 was as Secretary of the General Staff, Headquarters, Marine Corps.
Ted retired from the Marine Corps in 1975 and became the Deputy Executive Vice President of the National Association of Federal Credit Unions, and was promoted to Vice President Finance and Administration in 1987. He was a member and deacon of Kirkwood Presbyterian Church in Springfield, VA . In 1991 Ted and Erline retired to Norfolk, VA.
Ted will be remembered for his character, integrity, steadfast loyalty, commitment to family, and his relentless optimism. He is survived by his wife, Erline, their three children, Perri Michele Bayter (John) of Fairfax, VA, Edward Young Holt III (Kim) of Virginia Beach, VA, and Andrew Skillman Holt (Donna) of Fairfax, VA; and seven grandchildren.
