Deceased Name: JACOB "JAKE" AVAKIAN
JACOB "JAKE" AVAKIAN, 79, of Smith Street, a retired foreman, died yesterday at Berkshire Place Nursing Home. He was the husband of Ann (Kaprielian) Avakian. A lifelong resident of Providence, he was a son of the late Armenag and Aznive (Messerlian) Avakian. Mr. Avakian was employed for the former Builders Iron Foundry, East Greenwich, for 40 years before he retired in 1978.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving in the Seabees Construction Battalion. He was a 32nd-degree Mason, a past master of Orpheus Lodge 36, AF&AM, and a member of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Providence.
He was a member of the Palestine Temple AAONMS Shriners, Cranston, and past president of the Shriners Oriental Band. He was past President of the board of trustees of Sts. Vartanantz Armenian Apostolic Church, Providence.
Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Armen J Avakian of Providence; a daughter, Alyce Ann Douglas in Bermuda; a sister, Maritza Avakian of Cranston; and five grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Charles and George Avakian. The funeral will be held Saturday at 9 a.m. from John K. Najarian Funeral Home, 1447 Westminster St., with a service at 10 in St. Vartanantz Armenian Apostolic Church, 402 Broadway. Burial with military honors will be in North Burial Ground Cemetery.
