Julie was born in her grandparents' cabin, (George W and Mary Elizabeth (McPeeters) Lewis) in Lewis Canyon, near Weed, Otero County, New Mexico

She was the fourth child of eleven. Nine children survived to adulthood. She grew up on Crow Flat, Otero, New Mexico. As were the rest of her siblings, she was spunky, feisty, quick witted, fun to be with, and very family oriented.

She married Hiram M. Neatherlin in Carlsbad, Eddy, New Mexico, March 6, 1929.

Julie was raised to take charge with any obstacle that might confront her. While living in Virden, NM, January 1933, she was pregnant with her second child. Hiram was not at home when Julie went into labor. She was by herself with her son Jim who was only two at the time. She knew she had to get help. She saddled a horse, rode up beside a stump and pulled Jim up behind her. She rode 10 miles to their nearest neighbor. Benjamin was born breech later that night, but healthy. Although living in Virden, N.M. Ben was actually born in Duncan, AZ.

My Grandmother had never relayed this story to any of us. My father, Ben, was about 65 years old when her sister, Pearl (Lewis) Lunt relayed this to me.

Hiram and Julie moved a lot in their early life, but eventually bought a home in Carlsbad, NM. Julie and Hiram raised six children.

Julie kept foster children from the time they moved to Carlsbad in 1942 to the late 1950's. Many children went through their home, some for just a few days and others for longer periods, she and her family became attached to each one. Each child had a piece of her heart when they left the Neatherlin home.

Ma is sorely missed by the ones she left behind.
