Charlotte Gay (Phillips) Lane, 98, of Leslie, Arkansas, passed away on Saturday, September 5, 2020, at her home. Burial will be at Brookside Memorial Park.

Charlotte was born on June 29, 1922, in Kerens, Texas, to the late Clyde Oklahoma Phillips and Cleo Belle (Smith) Phillips, the first child and only daughter of their five children. She grew up and graduated from high school in Kerens.

Charlotte lived in Houston, Texas, most of her life and worked as a beautician for 22 years, retiring at the age of sixty.

She loved to travel. She enjoyed taking bus tours all over the United States. On one of these trips, one man was always late getting back to the bus. Charlotte, being a bit mischievous, bought a cow bell and had the tour director put it around the neck of the last person getting on the bus. The man was never late again.

Charlotte took several cruises. She loved telling about one of her trips to Hawaii when she was on stage and kissed Don Ho. The group she traveled with took a vacation to a foreign country each year. Some of the places she visited included Italy, Greece, Jerusalem, Germany, Austria, Holland, England, and Scotland. She always had fun.

Besides enjoying the historic buildings and countryside, she always found a little more to do, such as riding a camel, crawling into a cannibal pot, posing in giant Dutch clogs, and seeing her friend baptized in the River Jordan.

Charlotte moved to Leslie, Arkansas, in 2010 to live with her daughter. She soon began to volunteer and enjoyed meeting new friends at the Searcy County Senior Center in Marshall. She even won ribbons in the Senior Olympics. She also loved to quilt on Monday at the Methodist Church in Leslie. She was always eager to play Bingo at the Oxley Community Center when the EHC sponsored fundraisers. She loved to crochet and won ribbons at the Searcy County Fair. She also donated crocheted caps to the Children's Hospital in Little Rock. Charlotte was friendly, quick-witted, and never met a stranger. Everyone who met her loved her.

She was preceded in death by her husbands: William Dean Morgan, James Walter Merritt, and Joseph Foy Lane; and brothers: Clayton, Bernard, Eugene, and Truman.

Survivors include her children: Joyce Brewer, Eva Harrell, Waymon Morgan, and Ann Stroud; 12 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and 15 great-great-grandchildren; other relatives and many friends. A2
