Former Anchorage resident Kirk Edwin Bell , 48, died July 31, 2003, at the Alta Bates Oncology Hospital in Berkeley, Calif., of complications from acute leukemia. A service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Evergreen Memorial Chapel, 737 E St., with the Rev. Dr. Alonzo Patterson Jr. officiating. Pallbearers will be Dane Jackson, Eddie Dearman, William Frick, Chris Nash, Carl Henderson and Biff Franklin. Taylor Hanes will serve as honorary pallbearer. Burial will be at Angelus Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mr. Bell was born Dec. 9, 1954, in Anchorage. He graduated from East High School, where he was a star basketball and track athlete. After graduation, he worked for several years on the trans-Alaska oil pipeline and then with Lynden Air Freight. Mr. Bell moved to California during the late 1980s to begin vocational studies. In 2000, he moved to Las Vegas, where he became a minister. He loved preaching to his congregation and would spend hours planning his weekly sermons and Bible study classes. His hobbies were working out at the gym, playing gospel music, writing poetry and playing basketball. His family said: " Kirk is in heaven and at peace, but he will be greatly missed by us and will always have a special place in our hearts that no one else can fill."

Mr. Bell is survived by his stepfather, Leo Bailey of Anchorage; father, Theron Bell of Colorado; daughter, Blaze Bell of Anchorage; sisters, Kimberly Harris of Tennessee and Joycelyn Pinell of California; brothers, Mark Bell of Arizona and Britt Bailey of Anchorage; sister and brother-in-law, Margo and Bobby Goldsboro of California; nieces, Blythe Demory of Anchorage, Syreeta Pinell of California, Angela Walters of Anchorage and Jazmin Bell of New York; nephew, Dante Walters of Anchorage; and numerous cousins and great-cousins. He was preceded in death by his mother, Eugenia Bailey; grandparents, Margaret and William Rhue, and Sterling Bell ; sister, Leslie Walters; and niece, Lanette Harris. Arrangements were with Evergreen Memorial Chapel.
