John M Porter joined cousin Beverly Porter c 1830 in a salt making venture in Velasco, Brazoria County, Tejas - province of Mexico. John had just received a Mexican landgrant for half a league of land where the "San Antonio Road crosses the Brazos [River] when the cholera epidemic swept Velasco killing both he and Beverly Porter.

Beverly's brother, John Porter, arrived Velasco in early April 1833 with family, and appears to have succeeded to his cousin John M Porter's landgrant.
