Richard met his wife at a Western Michigan University Veteran’s Club party. They fell in love after Richard wrote Andrea a thank-you note for being such a great date. Richard and Andrea were married in July 1967. Richard worked in Federal Government Services for over 31 years. He served in the United States Marine Corp from 1959 to 1964. He began his 27-year career as a Federal Agent for the Department of Justice in 1969 and later became a Special Agent in Charge of the Cincinnati DEA office until he retired in 1996. Richard liked working with the local police departments and, at his retirement, he received recognition of Honorary Kentucky Colonel. Richard loved being outdoors, and he especially loved to fish and hunt. He had a great love for his dogs and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
Richard is survived by: his wife of 53 years, Andrea McCoy; a son, Timothy (Nicole) McCoy; a daughter, Kristin (Roger) Schalk; four grandchildren, Megan Schalk, Amanda Schalk, Nathan Schalk and Eleanor McCoy; four sisters, Florence (George) Turney, Carol Tremper, Marsha Kyser and Donna Jean Shelley; and many nieces and nephews. Richard is proceeded in death by: his parents, Leo and Joyce McCoy; a brother, Ralph McCoy (survived by wife Gail McCoy); and brothers-in-law, Jim Tremper, Charlie Kyser and Mike Shelley.
A celebration of Richard’s life, with a memorial graveside service, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 26, at Roscommon Township Cemetery, in Houghton Lake Michigan. Burial will follow, with military honors. The family asks donations to be made in support of Alzheimer’s Association. A tribute page to Richard has been established at cooperfuneralhome.net.
