Cleveland - DR. EUGENE EDWARD TIBBS died Saturday morning, February 2, 2008, at his home with his family present. Funeral Services are scheduled for Wednesday, February 6, 2008, at 2:30 p.m. at Our Lady of Victories Catholic Church. Visitation will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the church prior to the service. Burial will follow in Shelby Cemetery under the direction of Ray Funeral Home. Dr. Tibbs was born on July 30, 1934, in Hushpuckena, MS. He graduated from Duncan Consolidated High School and attended Delta State University. He earned his medical degree from the University of Tennessee in 1958. He specialized in surgery and completed his residency at the University of Tennessee in Memphis, where he was chief surgical resident. He returned to the Delta and began practicing surgery and general medicine in Cleveland. He married Martha Jane Pullen of Memphis on February 22, 1964, and they had two children. Dr. Tibbs enjoyed hunting, historical documentaries, and political discourse. He practiced medicine for 45 years before retiring at the age of 73. He was preceded in death by his father, Eugene Clinton Tibbs; his mother, Laverne Katherine Fell; his sisters, Laverne Tibbs Childress and Betty Jane Tibbs; and his brother, Dr. Robert Clinton Tibbs II. Survivors include his wife, Martha Jane Pullen Tibbs; his son, Eugene Edward Tibbs, Jr., who is an attorney; his daughter, Martha Katherine (Jenny) Tibbs, who is a physician; and five grandchildren, Sophie Elaine, Charlotte Claire, Eugene Edward III, Eleanor Katherine, and John Ralston.
