In 1880 Martha and Rufus were living in Rochester, Monroe, New York, where he was a dry goods merchant. Son Edward was then age 3. Martha's death was recorded at Charlton, Massachusetts. It also referenced her connection to Rochester, New York.
The Springfield Daily Republican of 14 May 1928 reported his death. "RUFUS A. SIBLEY DEAD. Former Spencer Man, Helped Found Rochester Store. Rochester, New York, May 13 – (AP) – Rufus A. Sibley, 86, one of the founders of the Sibley, Lindsay & Curr department stores died yesterday. Mr. Sibley returned from his winter home in Augusta, Ga., a month ago. He was born at Spencer, Massachusetts, 31 Dec. 1841, and with two other men founded the department store in 1868. He retired from active connections with the business some years ago. A daughter Mrs. Kingdon Knott Robbins of Rochester, and two sons, Dr. Edward R. Sibley of Philadelphia and John Sibley of Spencer survive." Rufus and Elizabeth are buried in Mt. The Rochester, New York, Democrat Chronicle of 18 May 1928 reported that Rufus Sibley left an estate worth $300,000. "Dr. Edward R. Sibley, a son, of Gwynedd Valley, Penn., receives real estate at Augusta, Ga., with furnishings and $100,000. John R. Sibley, of Spencer, Mass., inherits all household goods, livestock, tools and appliances on the Sibley estate at No. 950 East avenue. Bonds sufficient to provide annual income of $3,000. for life for Walter B. Benson, nephew of the testator's deceased wife, of the Sagamore, are placed in trust with John R. Sibley and the Security Trust Company. At the termination of the trust the bonds pass in equal shares to the three children. The residue is shared equally by John R. Sibley and Mrs. Elizabeth S. Robins, of No. 935 East avenue. They are named joint executors. The will was executed Nov. 8, 1924. Castle & Fitch are attorneys for the estate."[ix]
A jewelled processional cross was given to St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Rochester by Mrs. Kingman Nott Robins and John Russell Sibley in memory of their mother. It was designed by Ralph Adams Cram.[x]
