Virginia Lee Gibson, 85, of Hayesville passed away Monday, May 18, 2020 at her residence. She was born in Towns County, Georgia, but also lived in Fontana before moving to Hayesville, where she lived for the past 60 years. Virginia loved both country and gospel music. She enjoyed buck dancing, gardening, canning, and cooking for her friends and family. Spending time with her grandchildren was Virginia’s favorite pastime. She had attended the Apostolic Church of Jesus Christ in Hiawassee, Georgia.
She was the daughter of the late Richard and Beulah Gibson Wheeler and the wife of the late Wayne Gibson, who died November 27, 2000. She was also preceded in death by two sons, Larry and Timothy Gibson; two brothers, Carroll and Cline Wheeler; a grandson, Terrence Barrett; and a great-granddaughter, Ashley Gibson.
Surviving are four daughters, and a son, three sisters, Jumilta Boozer and husband, Tony of Piedmont, South Carolina, Pat Morrow and husband, Tom of Anderson, South Carolina, and Georgia Genet Howell of Pelzer, South Carolina; two brothers, Raleigh Wheeler and wife, Betty Jean of Young Harris, Georgia and Wilson Wheeler and wife, Elvie of Anderson, South Carolina; 18 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandson; and countless nieces and nephews.
The body lay in state from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Thursday, May 21, 2020 at the Ivie Funeral Home, Hayesville.
Graveside services were held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, May 21, 2020 at Philadelphia Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Richard Rickman officiating. Pallbearers were Eric and Alex Barrett, Jeremy Lands, Cody, Shane, and Rusty Gibson, and Tyler Bookholt. Honorary pallbearers were Charles Lands and Greg Mills.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in memory of Virginia Lee Gibson to the Philadelphia Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Fred Hogsed, 2496 Clovis Road, Hiawassee, GA 30546.
