Fred was initially a feral cat who showed up one day around 2013/2014. I don't know when he was born. I think he was about 6 months old when he showed up at our house. He lived outside for awhile and at some point he slowly worked his way into the house. This happened when he was attacked by a raccoon or a mean cat. I took him to the vet and after a couple of weeks of recuperation he was much better. At that point he let himself in and out of the house. He became friends with my dog Flash and he'd walk with us when I'd take Flash for his daily walk. When Flash passed away in 2017 Fred was the only one of my cats that noticed he was gone and he meowed at me as though he knew.
Unlike most feral cats he did his share of meowing. He was tame enough that I could pet him and he loved that. He was sweet natured and when a couple of kittens came into our home he became like a foster Dad to them. In the beginning when he was still outside he "adopted" and looked after another younger feral cat who was also orange and white that showed up not long after Fred was at our home.
His name was Fred and I named him after an ancestor -Great Uncle Fred Davis. Even though Fred is normally a nickname I used that as his "legal" name and then I'd sometimes call him "Frederick". I'd say to him "Fred, Freddy, Frederick".
I miss you Fred. He's with his buddy Flash now. RiP.
