He is not found in the 1860 census but is in the 1863 draft registration still as a resident of Columbia, although he obviously was not living there at the time.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at an unlisted age in Missouri September 1, 1861, and mustered into federal service that day as 1st lieutenant of Co. G, 2nd Missouri Cavalry. During in June 1862, he was detached to St. Louis as acting assistant adjutant general and was on several other occasions throughout his service detached to other duties. He was promoted to captain to date July 15, 1862, and transferred to Co. A, then re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer January 5, 1864, at Brownsville, Arkansas, and promoted to major to date December 6, 1864. He honorably discharged with the regiment September 19, 1865. He applied for his pension as "Houston."

He married Kentucky-born Mary Frances May and fathered the children you see listed below. On August 7. 1890, he applied for a disability pension from Missouri, but Mary applied for a widow's pension from California. No obituary was found for George in any online newspaper archive.
