Robert Franklin Jacobsen, age 82, of Northfield, longtime owner of the former Jacobsen's Department Store in Northfield, died on Thursday, Sept. 6, 2007, at the Northfield Hospital.
Bob was born on April 17, 1925, in Cherokee, Iowa, son of Ralph and Aura (Clough) Jacobsen. His family moved to Mitchell, S.D., and later to Waseca, Minn., where Bob attended school and was introduced to Boy Scouts, rising to an eagle scout. Following graduation, he joined the Army Air Corp during WWII as a tail gunner, serving on a B-17 and participating in 33 missions. Following his discharge, he enrolled at the University of Minnesota. While at the University, Bob met fellow student, Elaine Adeline Davis, of Minneapolis, and the two were married on November 28, 1946, in Minneapolis. Over the next 20 years the couple made their home in Stillwater, Minn., where Bob taught school; Stevens Point, Wisc., where he directed sales training for Hardware Mutual Insurance (now Sentry Insurance); and Arlington, Va., where he worked for the National Chamber of Commerce as a lobbyist in D.C. In 1968, following the death of his father, Bob and his family moved to Northfield to manage the family business, Jacobsen's Department Store, "the store with a heart." To the delight of Northfield, their work in the store continued until closing in 2003. Bob was well known for his support of downtown Northfield and his generosity to many groups and organizations.
Bob is survived by his daughter, Bobbie Peterson of Northfield; sons, Rollie (Shar) of Northfield, Reverend Richard (Joy) of Eagle River, Wisc., and Russ of Hutchinson, Minn.; brother, Richard (Cathy) of Burnsville; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Elaine.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 20, 2007, at the First United Church of Christ in Northfield, with visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the Bierman Funeral Home in Northfield. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to Northfield Hospice, Manger Inn, or American Refugee Committee.
Funeral arrangements are with the Bierman Funeral Home of Northfield.
