MOORE, ALGERNON, Sr. 76, retired Dade County schoolteacher, transitioned on Tuesday, July 16, 2002 at 12:15 AM. Born in Gifford, FL on March 1, 1926, the seventh child of Chester A. and Josephine Moore, he spent his early years in Fort Pierce, FL. After serving his country in Europe in WW II, Algernon enrolled at Morehouse College earning a degree in English in 1951. Popular around campus, he was a star football player and opera soloist with the Morehouse Glee Club. Family and friends affectionately knew him as "Bro". Upon moving to Miami, he was employed as a mail carrier for 8 years. In 1961 he began a career as a teacher at North Dade Senior High School where he met wife Patsy. They were married the same year. The union was blessed with five children. Mr. Moore taught for 35 years, his last teaching position at Miami Northwestern Senior High School. He selflessly devoted his time to family and students and was known for his sense of humor and fun-loving nature. Family and friends remember him as being intelligent and athletic, but in spite of his many talents he was a humble man and adored by many. His eldest son, Mojus Solomon Tenkamenin, preceded him in death. His life is celebrated by his wife, Patsy; 3 daughters, Angela, Joanna, and Rachel; 1 son, Algernon, Jr.; 4 grandchildren, Marcus, Hasan, Jihad, Queen Tiye; 1 brother, A. D. Moore; and a host of other relatives and friends.The family will receive friends at Range Funeral Home on Friday, July 19th, 7-9 p.m. A celebration of his life will be conducted on Saturday, July 20th at 2:30 p.m. at Unity on the Bay located at 411 N. E. 21st Street. Final rites and burial will be conducted Monday in Fort Pierce, Florida. Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity will hold its rites during the family hour.
