Philip A. Lowe, Jr., teacher
by Ruth Ingram, C-L Assistant City Editor

Philip A. Lowe, Jr., 43, of 2851 Tara Drive, Jackson, died of pneumonia on Saturday at Jackson's Methodist Medical Center. His service is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. today at St. Andrew's Episcopal Cathedral with burial in Lakewood Memorial Park. Lakewood Memorial Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Mr. Lowe was a lifelong resident of Jackson. He graduated from Provine High School in 1965. He received a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Mississippi College and a Master of Arts degree from Jackson State University. He completed additional studies in Graz, Germany.

For the past five years, Mr. Lowe was a member of Wingfield High School's teaching staff where he taught English. Prior to that, he taught English and German at Murrah High School for a number of years. Mr. Lowe was named Star Teacher three times while a JPS teacher. During the 1987-88 school year, he was selected Teacher of the Year for Jackson and was one of three finalists for the Mississippi Educator of the Year award.

"It's a tragic loss," said Buddy Bounds, principal of Wingfield High School. "He was a super teacher; he taught our AP English classes. You can't replace a person like that."

"He was a super person. When the students left his class going to college, they were prepared. I talked with a student just the other day who had him last year. She said she hated every minute of his class, but when she got to college, she loved the man to death. He made her do what she needed to do, and she was more than prepared." said Bounds.

"He had an excellent reputation as a teacher," said Dan Merritt, deputy superintendent of JPS and a former assistant principal at Wingfield. "He was one who demanded a lot out of the students and, in return, received it. He had a reputation as an excellent teacher of English." Mr. Lowe served on the Jackson district's instructional council for two years when Merritt chaired the council. "I always found him to have a keen mind and to contribute ideas of his own," Merritt said. "He was a valuable asset to that group."

Mr. Lowe was also a part-time instructor of German at Belhaven College and an accomplished violinist. He was a longtime member of both the Jackson Symphony Orchestra and the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra. He also played with the Greenwood and Meridian orchestras and with many area churches. He was a member of First Church of Christ Scientist.

Mr. Lowe is survived by his wife Marilyn, his sons Eric Brian and Christopher Andrew, and his sister Pat Estinjoy of New Orleans.

Memorials may be made to a church of choice.
