BETTYE LUCILLE SMITH BROWN was born July 1, 1949 and was called home on August 29, 2020. She was the 4th of 5 children born to Charlie and Missouri Smith in Vicksburg, Mississippi. She accepted Christ at an early age at Beech Grove Missionary Baptist Church. She ran her Christian journey to completion and was faithful to God all of her days.
Bettye was truly beloved, and she touched so many lives. Everyone she encountered felt lifted by her presence, intellect, wisdom, grace, and that beautiful smile! Her warm and gracious spirit and delicious cooking created a welcoming atmosphere where love, laughter, joy, and peace thrived. She was an avid reader, crossword puzzle expert,
and the family’s wise counselor. Perhaps her most prized role was as a wonderful Mother. She selflessly molded her children in the fear of the Lord and with a respect for education, independence, kindness, and service.
She graduated from Rosa A. Temple High School in 1967 and attended Alcorn State University. She became a member of the Delta Epsilon Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. in 1968, recently celebrating 51 years of service to the organization. She served as a long-time dedicated member of Holly Grove Missionary Baptist Church where she was the Sunday School Superintendent, teacher of the adult class, and member of the Mother’s Board. Bettye retired with distinction as a dedicated Farm Service Program Coordinator for the United States Department of Agriculture. She was a committed member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
Bettye was preceded in death and is now welcomed to glory by her daughter, Anita Rochelle Smith; her parents; her uncle, David Smith; her brothers, Fred M. Smith and Charles J. Smith; and her sister-in love, Gloria H. Smith.
Bettye leaves to cherish her memory, her daughters, Adrienne Anita Mosley (Damon) of Plano, Texas and Fayedra Brown-Dear (Carl) of Rowlett ,Texas; her grandson, Harrison Clarke Dear; her brother Reverend Melvin Smith of Vicksburg, Mississippi; her sister, Alfreda S. Thomas of Vicksburg, Mississippi; her sister-in-law, Barbara H. Smith of Chicago, Illinois; special cousins: Myrtle Adams of McKinney, Texas, Patricia Martin of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Vivian Smith of Albuquerque, New Mexico; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and beloved friends, including the Sanders, Bradford, Boyd, Huell, Giles, Hudson, Scott, Jenkins, Stewart, Carter, and Freeman families.
The legacy Bettye leaves is undeniable. It is one of faith, resilience, compassion, empathy, joy, and love. She will be missed tremendously. We praise God for her salvation, life, and legacy. Her life’s ministry now calls us to follow her example and faithfully labor in God’s harvest (Matthew 9: 38) to His glory.
