Life History

Gladys Taylor was born on December 23, 1935 in Cincinnati, Ohio. She wa the third of four children born to George and Ophelia Taylor.

Gladys was raised in the West End neighborhood and attended Cincinnati Public schools. After leaving school, she held a variety of jobs before becoming employed at Good Samaritan Hospital where she remained for 30 years, before her retirement on September 5, 1998.

Gladys, in her youth, attended Shiloh Baptist Church where she accepted Christ and was baptized. Later in her adult life she joined Fifth Christian Church.

There was so much to Gladys. She was a shopper. In fact, she loved shopping. She never refused to join you if you were going shopping, especially if there was a sale going on. She had a fetish for high quality lounge wear and shoes. She enjoyed baking and very good at it, a trait she picked up from her father. Her coconut cakes were excellent. Chili, however, was her specialty. She regularly made chili for her family. Gladys was also a saver. She encouraged everyone to save coins in a jar and to open and maintain a savings account.

Gladys, most of all, was family focused. She gave and devoted a lot of her time to her family. Although, she had no children of her own, she excelled at being an Aunt. She invested so much of herself in helping to raise her nieces, Joanne and Bunnie. She was consistently there for them, as well as for her brother, Melvin.

Gladys always wanted to impart knowledge to the next generation. She took joy in spending time with her great-great nieces doing projects with them. She taught two generations how to crochet and bake. She always wanted to hear about the accomplishments of the next generation and was so proud of them. In the last years, as she began to slow down a bit, she begun crocheting blankets for everyone. She also enjoyed doing word search puzzles.

Gladys departed this life on Thursday, August 20, 2020 at 1:35pm. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother George, Jr. and sister Lillian Jones. She leaves her brother Melvin, nieces Joanne Johnson and Ellen (Bunnie) Miller, as well as a host of great nieces and nephews to mourn her passing.
