Clayton Leon Hill, age 91, of Powell, formerly of New Market, passed away on Monday, August 31, 2020. He was of the Methodist faith. Clayton was a member of the Masonic fraternity as a Shriner and a member of the Legion of Honor, where he served as a 1st Commander. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy from 1947- 1953, serving on the USS Rendova on a world cruise in 1948. He served 2 tours of duty in the Korean War on the USS Valley Forge, from whose deck Carrier Air Group 5 made the first naval air strike on North Korea on July 3, 1950. He was also retired from Peterbilt of Knoxville.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mercedes “Mickey” Hill; mother, Margret Balter; father, Clay Hill; brother, Calvin Hill; and step-son, Monte Hall.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Hill; step-daughter, Jill Smith; 4 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild.
Graveside service 2:30 PM Thursday, September 3, 2020, at Louisville Cemetery with Dr. Greg Lindsey officiating. Mr. Hill will lie in state on Wednesday from 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM at Fielden Funeral Home in New Market.
