204 Lance Corporal James Anderson Smith, 4th Victorian Imperial Bushman (Victoria, 4th Imperial Contingent). Son of James Stuart Smith, a journalist of Melbourne, Australia. Volunteered for service in South Africa during the Second Anglo Boer War. Served in Lord Methuen's Division for 7 months and had been involved in the fighting around Ottoshoop, about 30km east of Mafeking. Died of enteric fever (typhoid)in No 16 Stationary Hospital, Mafeking, Cape Colony aged 22 years.
