204 Lance Corporal James Anderson Smith, 4th Victorian Imperial Bushman (Victoria, 4th Imperial Contingent). Son of James Stuart Smith, a journalist of Melbourne, Australia. Volunteered for service in South Africa during the Second Anglo Boer War. Served in Lord Methuen's Division for 7 months and had been involved in the fighting around Ottoshoop, about 30km east of Mafeking. Died of enteric fever (typhoid)in No 16 Stationary Hospital, Mafeking, Cape Colony aged 22 years. He is also commemorated on the Australian War Memorial Roll of Honour in Canberra, Australia; on the Ballarat Boer War Memorial (Queen Victoria Square), Sturt Street, Ballarat, Central Highlands, Victoria, Australia (see: https://vwma.org.au/explore/memorials/2600) and on the South Melbourne Boer War Commemorative Drinking Fountain, South Melbourne Town Hall, Fishley Street, South Melbourne, Port Phillip, Victoria, Australia (see: https://vwma.org.au/explore/memorials/3103).
