Marie Cartinhour Woods, 95, died peacefully on August 27, 2020 at her home in Monteagle Tennessee. Born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, she grew up on Lookout Mountain and graduated from the Bright School and the Girls Preparatory School in Chattanooga and attended Randolph Macon Women's College in Virginia.

During almost fifty years of marriage to The Very Reverend G. Cecil Woods Jr., Marie was a dedicated, active, and faithful member of the Episcopal Church assisting at parishes and academic institutions in Dyersburg, Tennessee, Sewanee, Tennessee, and Alexandria, Virginia. She also lived with her family for a time in New Haven, Connecticut and Oxford, England. Despite living in many wonderful places, Marie always considered Sewanee, with its incredible natural beauty, her true home. She was a devoted and loving mother to her four daughters and their families.

Marie was preceded in death by her parents, William Carl Cartinhour Sr. and Kathleen Gager Cartinhour, her husband G. Cecil Woods, Jr. and her eldest daughter Kathleen Woods. Marie is survived by brother William C. Cartinhour Jr.; daughters, Ellen, Margaret, and Caroline Woods; sons-in-law Philip Johnson and Gordon Peerman; grandchildren Josephine VanDevender Ward (Giles), Cecil VanDevender (Lauren), Benjamin Polansky (Caroline), Michael Polansky, William Denkler (Megan), Lydia Denkler, Katherine White (Michael); and great-children Hugo and Cecil Ward, Lucia and Mae Polansky.

A small private family service will be held at her interment followed by a memorial service in 2021. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Otey Memorial Parish, the University of the South, or St. Andrew's–Sewanee School.
