On May 24, 1848 Josiah P Vancil married Sarah E Miller in Tazewell County, Illinois. They were the parents of eight children, and Sarah passed away at the time of the birth of the last one, on December 19, 1864 in Pekin, Tazewell County, Illinois. Josiah had been in the Illinois Volunteer Infantry, Company K, 68th Regiment, Civil War, from which he was injured.

On October 17, 1866 Josiah married Harriet J Barritt in Peoria County, Illinois. Together they had one son, Edmond Patterson Vancil. They often called him Edward, and he went by both. They resided for a while in Bainbridge, Schuyler County, Illinois where Josiah continued his work as a blacksmith. They then migrated to Iola, Allen County, Kansas.

Josiah joined the Grand Army of the Republic in Iola, McCook Post #51. He continued to work as a blacksmith in Iola. They later moved to Toronto, Woodson County, Kansas, and Josiah transferred to the GAR Toronto Post #199, who finally provided the headstone for his burial in the Toronto Cemetery.
