Jan graduated from Arsenal Technical High School and went on attend the University of Miami (FL) and graduated from Indiana University-Bloomington with a Bachelor of Science and Indiana University-Indianapolis with a Master of Science in Elementary Education.
A devoted elementary school teacher with the Indianapolis Public Schools for 43 years, she loved connecting with her students and helping them achieve their dreams. Much of her career was spent teaching sixth graders at School 112 and first graders at School 34. Jan relished running into her students as adults and seeing all that they had achieved. She also treasured her teaching colleagues with whom she forged many close, life-long friendships.
Jan was a woman of faith and found strength from her bible study group and attending services at Smith Valley United Methodist Church. An avid reader, Jan loved all types of fiction, but was especially fond of suspenseful mystery novels. She read multiple books a week throughout her entire life. She adored traveling and especially enjoyed trips to Orange Beach, AL where she owned a vacation home. She loved hosting friends and family at the beach and spent many hours walking the beach and enjoying the sun.
Jan was extremely proud of her family and is survived by her daughter Suzanna (John) Annakin and two sons Jason and Chris (Dawn) Munro, all of Indianapolis; three grandchildren, Emily, Ben, and Sam Annakin; and sister, Linda Banta.
She also dearly missed her brother who preceded her in death, David Banta.
