Obituary:

John L. "Johnny" Nelson was born December 8, 1938, in Houston, Texas to George P. Nelson and Alice Nelson. He passed away Sunday, January 21, 2018 at the age of 79. Johnny was a Katy High School graduate and attended Sam Houston State University. A lifelong rice farmer and cattleman, Johnny opened and owned Katy Sales & Supply from 1969 until 2014. He served as Mayor of the City of Katy from 1983-1987, then was hired as City Administrator in 1994, a position he held until his retirement in 2014.

Johnny faithfully served in several civic and community groups including Katy Rotary Club, Tri-County Optimist Club, board member of West Harris County Water Authority, member and past President of Katy Chamber of Commerce, honorary member of Katy FFA and Board of Directors Katy Savings & Loan. He was honored with the first annual City of Katy employee service award in 2001 and was also honored as the 1998 Katy Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year.

A Katy native, Johnny's great passion was to see the farming heritage of Katy preserved. In 2001, with the support of Mayor Doyle Callender and City Council, that passion became a reality and the Katy Heritage Museum was opened. Johnny continued to be the driving force behind the impressive collection of local historical memorabilia, farming equipment and implements and served as the Museum's curator until his death.

Johnny is survived by his wife of 51 years, Paulette; children, Sherry, Gary and wife, Alex, and Mike; grandchildren: Tonya, Jonathan, Austin and wife Ashley, Garrett, Stephanie, and Cade; great grandchildren: Keelan, Caleb and Addison; his sister, Deloras "Lo" Poorman; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other loving family members and a host of friends. Johnny was also survived by his beloved pups, BeBe and Homie, his running buddies.
