Schwartz, James Gordon, Deacon Jim, as he was known, passed away peacefully Sunday, August 23, 2020 in Ocala, FL, at age 84.
Jim was born February 8, 1936 in Chicago, IL., to parents, Wilfred William and Mildred (Eberle) Schwartz.
The family moved to Ocala in 1952 and Jim attended Ocala High school for a short time, then went to St. Leo Abbey at St. Leo, Florida and became a Benedictine Monk. He completed high school there and was sent to Benedictine College near Kansas City, MO and received a B.S. degree in business. Jim then returned to St. Leo and was a teacher and financial administrator. After many years at St. Leo, he left the monastic life and entered the business world. He worked at a multinational company as marketing manager traveling all over the southeastern US.
After retiring he always had a religious calling so he returned to Ocala and was ordained as a Catholic Deacon on June 3, 2000, where he served at Blessed Trinity Catholic Church. Jim had a prison ministry for 22 years with numerous prisons and jails in Marion County. The last few years he fostered high school boys from the Catholic Mission School in Uganda supported by his local Parish.
He was a member of Mensa of America, and Knights of Columbus a third degree. His interests were travel, locksmith challenges, and numismatic.
Jim was preceded in death by both parents and his brother, Richard E. (Dick).
He is survived by brothers, Kenneth A. (Nadine) Forsyth, GA, Dr. Robert N. (Irene) Houston, TX; sister, Janet (Maurice), Cedar Key, FL; Dr. Raymond E., West Palm Beach, FL, William F., Pompano Beach, Florida, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Vigil will begin 6PM, Wednesday, September 2, 2020 at Blessed Trinity Catholic Church. A recitation of the rosary will be from 7:30-8PM. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11AM, Thursday, September 3, 2020 also at Blessed Trinity. Bishop John Noonan will be the Presider of the Funeral Mass and Father Patrick Sheedy will be concelebrating along with other Priests. Members of the Deacon community are invited to attend. A Committal Service will immediately follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery, 5740 S. Pine Ave., Ocala, Florida 34480 with Deacon James Maubach officiating.
