Private Belden was captured on June 2, 1864, when Confederate forces surprised and overran the regiment's pickets at their encampment at Bermuda Hundred (Chesterfield Co.), Virginia, taking a large contingent of prisoners. Private Belden was held as a POW at the Andersonville prison pen, and was later transferred to the prison pen at Charleston, SC, were he died, four months after his capture.
