George Morrison Sutton passed away on August 24, 2020 at the age of 95. He was born March 10, 1925 on the family farm 10 miles north of Stratton, the fifth child of Lyle and Mabel Sutton. He was Morrison to the family, George in the Navy, GM to some, but Morry to most, as well as certain other names at times.
Morrison attended County School District 13 through the eighth grade and graduated from Stratton High School in 1942, never caring much for school. He served in the US Navy in the Pacific Theater during World War II and was discharged in 1946 after having served aboard three Destroyer Escorts, the USS Canfield, USS Gustafson, and USS Garfield Thomas. He said that if chipping hammers and wire brushes helped win the war, he was a hero. Morrison was the last surviving World War II veteran from Stratton. After leaving the Navy, Morry began farming on the home place.
On August 15, 1948 he married Geraldine Hanson ("the best thing that ever happened to me") and they moved into a native rock covered sod house built in 1905 by his Grandfather George Gallagher. They later built a new home next to the "soddy" because the water heater broke and carpenter father in law Fred Hanson said, "just build a new house"; and they did. Morry was a farmer and a rancher. His brand was Bar S Backwards 4-being the fourth son and always a little backward. Morry and Gerry moved from the farm into town in 1991. He still enjoyed running the tractor and continued to get in the way out on the farm. He was an unofficial greeter and windshield washer at Scott's Sinclair for a time, and enjoyed a good round of golf. He enjoyed people and conversation-frequently the last to leave any gathering.
Morry was a member of the Community United Methodist Church of Stratton, Masonic Lodge, Eastern Star, Shriners, VFW Post 9155, American Legion Post 281, Stratton School Board, and Cemetery Board. Morry and Gerry attended many of the ship's reunions traveling to various states to reunite with shipmates. They travelled many years to Gerry's "cousins reunion" in different states.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine (Hanson) Sutton; his parents, James Lyle and Mabel (Gallagher) Sutton; his sister Hazel Bryce; and four brothers, Donald, Ellis, Warren, and Gerald.
Survivors include 2 sons: Terry and his wife Linda, of Columbus, Nebraska; Lynn and his wife Ann, of Stratton; five grandchildren, Jason Sutton and his wife Sarah, of Kearney, Nebraska; Abby (Sutton) Massey and husband Jamie of Omaha; Ivy Sutton and husband Pat Oakes of Omaha; Jake Sutton and his wife Kayla of Stratton; and Kyle Sutton of Stratton; nine great-grandchildren; Layne, Avery, Autumn, Havalyn, Sawyer, Adeline, Maya, Perry, and Leo; his sister Janice Cheves of Albuquerque, NM.
Morry cared about family, friends, community and country. He will be greatly missed by his family and all who knew him. The attempts at humor in this obituary were included at Morry's request. And as he said, "I have had a good life and time marches on".
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, September 5, 2020 at 2:00 PM at the United Methodist Church of Stratton, NE with Pastor Rod Heilbrun officiating. Inurnment will be in the Rosehill Cemetery of Stratton with Military Honors.
