John A. Dunaway Sr. of Atlanta, a former state legislator and a retired attorney with the firm of Dunaway, Haas, Broome, Hope & Bridges in Atlanta, died of a stroke Saturday at Emory University Hospital. He was 86.
The funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Sandy Springs Chapel with burial at Arlington memorial Park.
Mr. Dunaway worked at the law firm, which he helped to found, from 1940 to 1980. John Allen Dunaway Sr. was born Feb. 18, 1900, in Columbia County, Ga., the oldest of four children of Henry Marshall and Mary Greene Dunaway. His father was a postmaster, farmer and owner of a dry-goods store.
He graduated from Harlem (Ga.) High School in 1916. He was a member of the first class to graduate from Emory University at its present location when he received a bachelor of philosophy degree in I920. Mr. Dunaway received his law degree from Emory's Lamar School of Law in 1923.
He served as business manager of the college's monthly magazine, The Emory Phoenix, and the college annual, Emory campus.
Mr. Dunaway married his first wife, Miss Kathryn Caldwell Fink, on April 26, 1928. She died in 1980.
He married Mrs. Sarah Owen-Nicholson of Decatur on Oct. 2, 1981.
Following graduation, Mr. Dunaway was admitted to the state bar and was affiliated with several law firms in Atlanta until 1940, when he became one of the founders of Dunaway, Haas, Broome, Hope & Bridges.
He served as president of the Stone Mountain Bar Association in 1937. He served one term in the Geor gia House of Representatives from 1941-43. Mr. Dunaway was on the Government Study Committee of Atlanta and Fulton County from 1946 to 1949.
He was a former board member of the Boys' Club of Atlanta. He belonged to the Masonic Lodge; the Atlanta and American bar associations; the State Bar of Georgia; the American Judicature Society; the Federation of Insurance Counsel; the International Association of Insurance Counsel; and the Sons of the American Revolution.
Mr. Dunaway was a charter member of Glenn Memorial Methodist Church in Atlanta and of Atlanta Southern Methodist Church. He belonged to the First Southern Methodist Church of Atlanta.
In addition to his wife, surviving are two sons, John A. Dunaway Jr. of Alexandria, Va., and Dr. Marshall C. Dunaway of Thomasville, Ga.; a daughter, Mrs. Louise Dunaway Grovensteen of Atlanta; a brother, Mr. James R. Dunaway of Jackson, Miss.; a sister, Mrs. Ruth Smith of: Harlem, Ga.; and five grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family requested that contributions be made to the First Southern Methodist Church at 3101 Paper Mill Rd., Marietta, Ga. 30067.
