Keith Schaefer was born on 20 December 1928 to David Schaefer and Elsie Brain. Keith became an Australian Rules footballer who played with the South Melbourne Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL).
During his career Keith played 102 games for South Melbourne, between 1947 and 1953, as a centreman. Keith Schaefer represented Victoria in an interstate match in 1948, at the age of just 19 years. He won South Melbourne's best and fairest award in 1952.
At the end of the 1953 VFL season, Keith left South Melbourne to take on the role of playing coach of Deniliquin Football Club.
In 1955, Schaefer was captain-coach of the Traralgon Football Club.[6]
He died on 21 August 1976.
