Thomas, Franklin B. III, also known as Fritz, and, jokingly, "the miserable one", age 90, of Centerville, OH, passed away on Saturday, August 22, 2020, at Bethany Village in Centerville. He was born October 15, 1929, in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, to the late Franklin B. Jr. and Mary Rohloff Thomas. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Barbara R. Thomas; his daughter, Bonnie Pray of Cincinnati, OH; a grandson, Jacob Thomas Pray; and his brother, Charles (Betty) Thomas, of Conshohocken, PA. Fritz graduated from Conshohocken High School in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania in 1947. He served in the Air Force from 1950 to 1954 and was a Korean War veteran. He attended the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and received his bachelor's degree at Elizabethtown College in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania. He was a CPA and partner with the international Certified Public Accounting firm of Ernst & Young in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; and held the positions of Chief Financial Officer for St. Joseph Hospital in Lancaster, Pennsylvania; for Wilmington College, in Wilmington, Ohio; and for Muskingum University in New Concord, Ohio.

Fritz engaged in a lifetime of community service. From the age of 12 until the age of 89, he was an active Boy Scout, transitioning to adult Boy Scout committee member, and in later years as member of the Boards of Directors of the Lancaster-Lebanon Council, Lancaster, Pennsylvania; the Muskingum Valley Council, Zanesville, Ohio; the Tecumseh Council, Wilmington, Ohio; the Miami Valley Council, Dayton, Ohio, and the Central Region Council of the Boy Scouts of America. He also served as President of the Muskingum Valley Council of the Boy Scouts of America, Zanesville, Ohio. Fritz received the Silver Beaver Distinguished Service Award from the Muskingum Valley Council, Boy Scouts of America in 1982, the Silver Antelope Distinguished Service Award from the Central Region of the Boy Scouts of America in 2004, and the Daniel Carter Beard Masonic Scouter Award from the Fritz Lodge #308 of Conshohocken, Pennsylvania in 2007. He was also a life member of the Conshohocken Fire Company No. 2. Fritz also served as Presidents of the Lancaster Optimist Club, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and the North Penn Chapter of the Institute of Management, Lansdale, Pennsylvania. He also served on the Boards of Directors of the Southeastern Ohio Symphony Orchestra and Evergreen Retirement Village, both of New Concord, Ohio; the Wilmington Family Y, Wilmington, Ohio; the Optimist Club of Lancaster, Pennsylvania; the Muskingum County Convention Facilities Authority, Zanesville, Ohio; and the United Way of Muskingum, Perry and Morgan Counties, Zanesville, Ohio. Fritz was honored in 2006 by the United Way of Muskingum, Perry and Morgan Counties, having a service award named in his behalf, the Cole-Thomas Lifetime Service Award, which is still given annually to recognize deserving individuals who devote themselves to community service through United Way organizations.

Fritz loved to travel, was an avid vegetable gardener (lucky his wife Barbara liked to pull weeds), enjoyed model railroading, appreciated a well-made crème brulee, and was a huge fan of ice cream – especially Graeter's. He was an active volunteer in the retirement community of Bethany Village and always had a positive and humorous attitude toward life – thus the joking reply when asked how he was on any given day, "miserable". He will be greatly missed by family, friends, and the Bethany Village community.

Private services will be held with burial at David's Cemetery in Kettering, Ohio. Contributions may be made to Normandy United Methodist Church, 450 W. Alex-Bell Road, Dayton, OH 45459, or to Bethany Village Gratuity Fund, 6430 Inner Mission Way, Dayton, OH 45459, in memory of Fritz Thomas.
