Jean resided at The Greens at Greenwich since February 2002. She was well-loved by the residents and staff of The Greens, who affectionately called her "Jeannie," and who were fond of her warm smile and gentle demeanor.

Jean was born on November 24th 1927 in Chicago, Illinois and was raised in Kansas City, Missouri during the Depression. She had no siblings and her parents divorced when she was a child. Despite the hardships, Jean excelled at school, which led to a degree in Journalism from the University of Missouri.

It was while working as the editor of the University's literary magazine "The Showme" that Jean met her future husband, Mort Walker, who based his comic strip character "Beetle Bailey" on his University of Missouri roommate. Jean later moved to New York City to marry Mort, where he had established himself as a magazine cartoonist and eventually sold his comic strip for national syndication.

After the comic strip became a hit, Jean and Mort moved to Greenwich, where they raised a family of five boys and two girls from the 1950s through the 1980's. In Greenwich, Mort created another successful comic strip based on their family life called "Hi and Lois." Like Lois, Jean was a very active Mom, serving as a Cub Scout den mother and Girl Scout troop leader, driving her kids around in the station wagon on her never-ending rounds. She was a member of the Julian Curtiss elementary school PTA for 25 consecutive years, which may be a record.

Despite her hectic family schedule, Jean had a rich social life and varied interests. She was editor of the Greenwich Junior League's Link Magazine for many years. She wrote many excellent poems and award-winning essays. Before and after her divorce in 1983, Jean was involved in many other clubs and social organizations, including The Junior League, The Greenwich Women's Club, The Greenwich Garden Club, Belle Haven and Millbrook Clubs, The English Speaking Union, The Wild Geese Society and The Audubon Society. Jean was a parishioner of St Mary's Church and later, St Michaels Church in Greenwich. With her knack for real estate, Jean became a successful property investor in her later years. She was also a bridge champion and an avid tennis and paddle tennis player. Jean enjoyed dancing and was known to cut a rug and roller skate on occasion. Jean was fun-loving, witty, outspoken, well-read and kind, with a strong sense of justice, a quiet modesty and frugal habits.

Jean was very proud of her 7 children, all surviving: Polly (Rich) Blackstock of OK, Roger (Katie) of CO, and Margie Hauer, Neal (Kristin), Morgan, Brian (Abby) and Greg who live locally. Jean is also survived by 13 grandchildren.

Calling hours will be from 4-8pm on Friday March 27th at Leo Gallagher Funeral Home, 31 Arch St., Greenwich. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St Michael's Church, 469 North St., Greenwich, at 10:30am on Saturday March 28th, followed by internment at St Mary's Cemetery, 399 North St.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jean's name to the Audubon Society of Greenwich, 613 Riversville Rd, Greenwich CT 06831.
