Actor. For over four decades he was an extensive performer who appeared in over 280 feature films and television programs. Born John Dehner Forkum, unlike most actors he started his career at Walt Disney Studios as an animator, later became a radio disc jockey and was also a professional pianist. As a lead voice player, he starred in the CBS Radio version of “Have Gun Will Travel” and “Frontier Gentlemen”. He made his big screen debut in “The Catman of Paris” (1946), followed by “Out California Way” (1946). Often cast in western films, his many credits included “Gun Belt” (1953), “Apache” (1954), “Tension at Table Rock” (1956), “The Iron Sheriff” (1957), “The left handed Gun” (1958), “Dirty Dingus Magee” (1970) and “Guardian of the Wilderness” (1976). For television, he was a regular on countless series such as “Gunsmoke”, “Wanted: Dead or Live”, “Zane Gray Theatre”, “The Roaring 20’s”, “Maverick”, “The Twilight Zone”, “The Virginian”, “The Doris Day Show”, “Rawhide” and many more. In addition, he also was the narrator for the entire “Walt Disney’s Wonderful World of Color” TV series.
