She was born March 19, 1920, in Leigh, Iowa the daughter of Harry and Veda (MacMullan) Helmstetter. She grew up in both Petersburg, where in the forth grade she met her future husband Bill, and in Springfield. Mary and Bill were married in Norfolk, Viginia on September 27, 1943.
Mrs. Turner graduated from the University of Missouri with a BA and BS, and Sangamon State University with a M.A. Mary loved the English language and literature, and taught these at Grant Junior High, Springfield High School, SSU and SIU, Sacred Heart Academy, and Lincoln Land College.
She loved her family, her faithful pets, reading, bridge, and her volunteer work. She also became skilled in photography, weaving, quilting and knitting.
She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, Kappa Alpha Theta, Margaret Garfield Chapter of King's Daughters, Junior League of Springfield, Chapter CA of PEO, Women's Symphony Guild, Sherlock Holmes Society, The Sangamo Club, and Illini Country Club.
She is survived and will be greatly missed by her husband of 64 years, William Turner of Springfield; children, Gary (wife, Carole) Turner, M.D. of Duluth, MN, and Susan (husband, James) Bankard of Chicago; grandchildren, Elizabeth (Husband, Jamie) Conklin of St. Thomas, USVI, Michelle (husband, Doug) Breiland of Duluth, MN, James Bankard Jr. of Chicago, and Jonathan Bankard of Seattle; and a great granddaughter, Sydney Elizabeth Breiland of Duluth.
Visitation will be held on Friday, August 31, 2007 at Boardman-Smith Funeral Chapel from 10 a.m. until the funeral service at 11 a.m. Interment will be at Oakland Cemetery, Petersburg.
