He was born on December 4, 1922, at Okmulgee, OK, a son of the late John N. Underwood Jr. and Dolly Myrtle Leak Underwood.
His wife of 45 years, Estelene C. "Kay" Underwood, survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Nancy Shannan and Sharla Patterson; one brother, Wayne L. Underwood; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Willadean Simpson (Jerry); two brother-in- laws, Luville Riddle and John W. Riddle (Phyllis) and special cousin, Mike Underwood and wife, Barbara.
Mr. Underwood received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering and was a retired Civil Engineer working for several companies in his life time constructing High Rise Buildings. His favorite work was design and build in the medical field. He was project manager over the construction of a hospital in Mason City, IO. He also owned and operated his own company J.D. Enterprises for two years. John was a member of Friendship Lodge #56 AF & AM West Union, a 32 degree Scottish Rite Mason and Shriner. He was a WWII veteran serving in the U.S. Marine Corp and a member of the Shirley United Methodist Church where he served as Lay leader.
The family would like to gratefully acknowledge the wonderful caretakers John had during his lengthly illness with Alzheimer's; Stacey Wright, Tina Ferrell and the great hospice team and especially Danielle who comforted him in his last hours. A special note of gratitude to Mike and Barb Underwood for their years of devotion to John.
The family will receive friends in the Harbert Funeral Home 287 W. Main St. on Wednesday, August 26, 2020 from 6 - 8 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted in the Harbert Funeral Home 287 W. Main St. Salem on Thursday, August 27, 2020 at 11 a.m. Interment will be in Floral Haven Memorial Gardens, in Broken Arrow, OK.
