Fr. Herbert Obijiski, OFM Conv., a resident of St. Mary Home in West Hartford since 2005, died at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford on Monday (October 2, 2006). He was 67. Born in Bridgeport, the son of Joseph and Eleanor (Panek) Obijiski. Fr. Herbert entered the Conventual Franciscan Friars of St. Anthony of Padua Province in 1956. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1965. Prior to serving as a parochial vicar for St. Paul Church in Kensington from 1996-2005, Fr. Herbert taught for 12 years at several high schools: Archbishop Curley High School in Baltimore, MD; St. Francis High School in Athol Springs, NY; the former Kolbe High School in Bridgeport; and Lourdes Regional High School in Shamokin, PA. In 1976, he joined the staff of Covenant House in New York City as a counselor for runaways. A year later, he was appointed pastor of St. Francis Church in Bessemer, AL. In 1985, he was appointed pastor of St. Stephen Church in Shamokin, PA. Fr. Herbert also served as a parochial vicar for St. Casimir Church in Riverside, NJ. While at St. Paul Church, Fr. Herbert endeared himself to the Parish-School community as the School's Pastor/Director to whom he remained very devoted during his years of struggle with diabetes and residential care at St. Mary Home. He is survived by his brother, Ronald Obijiski of Maryland, his brother, Regis Obijiski of Kensington, NY; and his sister, Elaine Levis and her husband, Paul of Duxbury, MA. As well as his confreres of St. Anthony of Padua Province. On Friday, October 6, Fr. Herbert will lie in state in St. Paul Church in Kensington from 6-9 p.m. with a Franciscan Memorial Service at 7:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, October 7 at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in St. Stanislaus B.M. Cemetery in Chicopee, MA. Contributions may be made in memory of Fr. Herbert to the Franciscan Education Fund at 12300 Folly Quarter Road, Ellicott City, MD or to St. Paul School, 461 Alling Street, Kensington, CT 06037. The Berlin Memorial Funeral Home, 96 Main Street, Kensington is in charge of arrangements.
