Musician. Son of alternative country artist Steve Earle and was named in honor of his father’s mentor, Townes van Zandt. He dropped out of school and sometimes toured and worked with his father. He went on to play in two Nashville bands -- The Distributors, a rock band, and The Swindlers, a ragtime and bluegrass combo. He then spent some time as a guitarist and keyboardist for the Dukes, his father’s touring band. He had a style of mixing folk, blues and country music. In 2007, he released an EP with six songs called “Yuma.” After that, he entered into a contract with Chicago's Bloodshot Records and released an album called “The Good Life” in 2008 and played the Grand Ole Opry. He co-billed The Big Surprise Tour with Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, Old Crow Medicine Show and The Felice Brothers in 2009 and released the album “Midnight at the Movies.” In September of 2009, he received the Americana Music Award for New and Emerging Artist of the Year. In 2010, he released the album “Harlem River Blues” and received the Americana Music Award in the Song of the Year category for it in 2011. That same year, he contributed a cover of “Maybe Baby” on the tribute album “Rave on Buddy Holly.” He also played Newport Folk Festival and the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival. Then in 2012, he came out with the album “Nothing's Gonna Change the Way You Feel About Me Now” which came in at number 37 on Rolling Stone’s list of Top 50 Albums of 2012. He also appeared in an episode of the HBO television series “Treme” with his father and produced Wanda Jackson’s album, “Unfinished Business.” He released a family trilogy of albums containing “Single Mothers” in 2014, “Absent Fathers” in 2015, and “Kids in the Street” in 2017.
