Dennis "Denny" Herbert Hanson, age 85, of Sandstone, MN, passed away on December 28, 2016 at his home surrounded by his family.

Dennis was born in Minneapolis, MN, to his parents William T.H. and Ida (Sandmeyer) Hanson on May 20, 1931. Dennis was the oldest of nine children. He was raised in St. James, MN. Dennis graduated from St. James High School in 1950. He was inducted into the St. James' High School Hall of Fame for athletics, having been the state champion in track (cross country).

Dennis continued his schooling at the University of Minnesota, where he was captain of the cross country and track team.

Following college, Dennis was the first employee hired to work at Thistledew Camp, working for the state of Minnesota. In 1955, he continued working for the state as an adult probation officer, based out of Crookston, Minnesota. Denny retired from the state, with 20 years of service. In 1976, Dennis continued working corrections through the Wilder Foundation and became the director of St. Croix Youth Camps in Sandstone, MN. Dennis was named Minnesota's Corrections Person of the Year in 1980. He retired from the Wilder Foundation in 1990. He then moved to Raleigh, ND, where he co-founded Prairie Learning Center Youth Corrections, ending his working career there in 2005.

Dennis was a life time avid outdoorsman enthusiast. A lifetime of hunting and fishing trips with family and friends are to his credit. Dennis climbed to the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro-Tanzania, in 1998 when he was 67 years old. He also spent three months in Alaska; fishing, hiking, and exploring. Dennis' other mission in life was spending time with his family.

Dennis is preceded in death by his parents, William (Ida) Hanson, and son in law, Chuck Burkart.

Dennis is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife, Helen (Scofield) of 63 years; his children, Dan (Debbie) Hanson, Lori (Cam) Sandberg, Glen (Faye) Hanson, Kelly Burkart (Karl Burrows), Terry (Aimee) Hanson, Shannon (Ken) Connell; his grandchildren, James, Bryce, Jeff, Cortney, Stacie, Sara, Jamie, Cody, Thomas, Alaina, Nancy, Taylor, Chandler, Robin; great grandchildren, Peyton, Spencer, Valerie, Wade, Roy, Donnie, Tyson, Ethan, Aiden, Tristan, Logan, Penny; sisters, Audrey Roiger, Ilene Carlson, Irene Wright, Marilyn (Joel) Nelson; brothers, Howard Hanson, Harlan (Arlene) Hanson, Gary Hanson, and Joseph (Robin) Hanson. Denny also leaves behind his faithful dog Daisy. Such a wonderful, giving man….he will be sorely missed.

A memorial service is planned for Denny at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 7, 2017 at the Methven Funeral Home in Sandstone, MN. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. A luncheon will take place after the service at the Cross Church (formerly Senior Dining Center), which is also in Sandstone, MN.
