Clarissa (Classie) Mae Norton, age 98 was born to the late James and Mollie Tully on July 15, 1922 in Russellville, Kentucky. She was the youngest of eight children.
Classie Mae accepted Christ at a very young age. Having had her father pass when she was only two years old, she would refer to God as her father whom led her through this life – often quoting “I know who holds my hand” and “Thus says the Lord!”
Classie Mae attended school in Russellville, Kentucky and graduated from Knob City High School. After graduating from high school, Classie Mae enlisted in the United States Army in the Women’s Army Corps (WAC) in WWII. Upon her completion of serving her country, she returned to her home town where she met and united in marriage to Mr. Robert Norton. To this union, God blessed them with 9 children.
In 1944, the couple moved to Indianapolis, Indiana where they raised their children. While in Indianapolis, Classie Mae attended several churches before joining Second Missionary Baptist Church where she served for over 50 years. She was a very faithful member and worked in several ministries: the Missionary Board, the Mother’s Board, Sunday School Teacher, Usher Board, Youth Director, and the Sick & Shut-In Committee which was later named the Lena Douglas Sick & Shut-In Committee. Her two main focuses in her life were teaching the Word of God and her family. Many Saturdays you would find her at church teaching the young children about God. When not teaching, she often took them on trips and picnics or other outings including the Zoo, circus, etc. No one can ever forget the Americana and Kings Island Amusement park trips taken each year. Sister Norton was also there if a person needed her or requested her help. She always tried her best to accommodate everyone.
Clarissa (Classie) Mae Norton was called home to be with the Lord, Sunday, August 16, 2020 at 98 years, 1 month, and 1 day. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Norton; her parents, James and Mollie Tully; sons, Robert W. Norton, David A. Norton and Thomas Joy Norton; brothers, Burl Taylor, Charles Taylor and Jim Taylor; sisters, Corine Black, Frances McCarley, Katie Bell Pence, and Magdalene Brown.
