She was educated in the Blackstone education system in Nottoway County, Virginia. While living in Virginia, Essie met Eddie Jackson and they married on December 24, 1949. Out of this union, six children were born, Ernest A. Fowlkes, William L. Jackson, Patricia D. Smith, Sandra A. Jackson, Deborah L. Jackson, and Lawrence R. Jackson.
Essie and Eddie moved from Virginia to Orange, New Jersey in 1960. They later moved to Irvington, New Jersey where they resided for 34 years.
Essie had various jobs such as school bus aide, day care provider and housekeeper. She was a member of Elmwood United Presbyterian Church. Essie enjoyed sewing, gardening, and cooking. She was especially known for her homemade rolls, pies, waffles and her famous popovers. She loved being surrounded by her family, those were the times she cherished the most.
She is predeceased by: her husband, Eddie Jackson; her brother, Joseph Fowlkes; her sisters, Lois Epps Isabelle Guzman and Parthenia Echols; and her sons, Ernest Fowlkes and William Jackson.
Essie leaves to cherish her memory: children, Patricia, Sandra, Deborah, and Lawrence; son-in-law, Frank; daughters-in-law, Patricia Fowlkes, Deborah A. Jackson, and Karen H. Jackson; brothers, David (Gladys) and Lawrence; sister, Fannie; grandchildren, Diane, Theresa, Camille (Vernon), Ty Keya, Nicole, Ashley, Christopher (Midori), and Brandon (Vanessa); great-grandchildren, Autumn, Mason, and Maxwell; and also a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
