Mabel Wilson Evans

11/5/12 ~ 4/12/03

Mabel Wilson Evans "Mimi" of Salt Lake City and St. George, Utah, passed away peacefully April 12, 2003, of natural causes.

She is happily reunited with her beloved husband, Oakley Spencer Evans, who preceded her in death March 21, 1995.

Mimi was born Nov 5, 1912, in Saragosa, Mexico to Guy Carlton Wilson and Agnes Melissa Stevens.

Mimi was very proud of her family history. Three generations of the Stevens family made a home in the Colonies in Mexico.

Guy C. Wilson was employed by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints all of his adult life and Melissa was a loving companion to him in Mexico and later in Utah. Mimi graduated from LDS High School in 1930.

She later attended Brigham Young University where she and Oakley met. Mimi and Oakley were married Sept 13, 1935 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.

Oakley was employed by the J.C. Penney Co. for 37 years. He and Mimi traveled all over the world until Oakley retired.

In 1972, Mimi and Oakley moved to Salt Lake City. Oakley became President of ZCMI and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

These experiences were such a joy for Mimi. She became "Mrs. ZCMI". She loved the store and the employees.

They joked when she didn't show up for two days in a row, saying they should have sent flowers because "she must be sick."

She was able to travel with the choir and loved the relationships she had there. Everywhere Mimi lived she was active in her church and in the community.

She took advantage of any opportunity to participate in the arts. She enjoyed painting, quilting, flower arranging, the theatre, ballet and symphony.

She was a strong supporter of youth and was active in the Darien Community Association, the Children's Aid Society, Coats for Charity, the Heart Association and many others.

Mimi was a student all of her life; she studied Shakespeare, sewing, Spanish, book reviewing and the scriptures. She served in the Relief Society and was a long-time visiting teacher.

She was an excellent cook and she was known by her children and grandchildren for making fabulous birthday cakes.

She loved to bowl, play bridge, golf and crochet. She enjoyed many wonderful friends and she felt blessed by those relationships.

Mimi loved her daughters and her anniversaries and birthdays were best spent by taking them on a cruise, traveling with them and just hanging out! Mimi is survived by one brother, five daughters, 15 grandchildren, and 46 great-grandchildren.

Her daughters are: Antoinette Clark (John), St. George, UT, Wendy Ruppel (John), Salt Lake City, Christine Evans, St. George, UT, Julie Simons (Steve), Hollis, NH, and Dinny Harter (Rich), Truckee, CA.

Services will be Tues. April 15, 12 noon Monument Park Stake Center, 1320 S. Wasatch Dr. Friends may call 10:30-11:45 a.m. at the church prior to the service.
