Conventual Franciscan priest

On March 17, 1928, Father Cyril was born into the Dragan/Augustyn and Franciscan families. The son of +Jan and +Marclea (Dragan) Augustyn was born in New Bedford, MA and was baptized Walter by the friars at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in New Bedford. After attending the Parish School and competing his high school education with the friars at St. Francis High School in Athol Spring, NY, he entered St. Lawrence Novitiate in Becket, MA and was given his religious name, Cyril, in August of 1946. His novitiate ended with his profession of temporary vows on August 15, 1947. From 1947 to 1953, he studied philosophy at St. Joseph Cupertino Seminary in Ellicott City, MD and theology at St. Hyacinth Seminary in Granby, MA where he professed his solemn vows on August 15, 1950 and was ordained on June 29, 1953. His first years of ministry involved him with young people through secondary education: Bishop Ryan High School in Buffalo, NY from 1953 to 1969, and Kolbe High School in Bridgeport, CT from 1969 to 1970.
After 3 years of parochial ministry as an assistant pastor at St. Hedwig Parish in his hometown of New Bedford, Father Cyril served his confreres as Secretary of the Province from 1973 to 1976, and as Vicar Provincial from 1969 to 1970. While serving as Vicar Provincial, Fr. Cyril also served as guardian of the Friary and pastor of the Parish of St. Adalbert in Elmhurst, NY until 1982. He then served for 9 years as the guardian of the Friary and pastor of the Parish of Mater Dolorosa in Holyoke, MA. In 1991, Fr. Cyril began what was to be his last assignment – guardian of the Friary and pastor of the Parish of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary in Taunton, MA. Battling diabetes, he entered Morton Hospital in Taunton in July of 1997 where he died on September 11, 1997. A Franciscan Memorial Service and Mass of Christian Burial were celebrated for Fr. Cyril at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church in Taunton, MA. Following the funeral on September 15, 1997, Fr. Cyril was interred as Sacred Heart Cemetery in New Bedford, MA (#2). Fr. Cyril was a gracious host and a builder of community. He was a friar who readily fostered a spirit of "welcome" and loved his Polish heritage. God asked St. Francis of Assisi to rebuild the Church. Fr. Cyril, as a follower of St. Francis, used his gifts to accomplish this Franciscan mission. His warm and fraternal spirit spilled over into making his confreres and guests always feel at home. Whether at a parish banquet/picnic or on a bus trip or at dinner with the friars, he would bring out his "song sheets" and lead all in song, especially his signature piece, "O My Darling, Clementine." At his funeral Mass, his family, confreres, and parishioners sang in tribute "Oh dear Cyril, O dear brother, this fond song is just for you. One last time we sing together, and we bid farewell to you."
