Nancy G. Harper, 83, of Strasburg, died at home Monday, May 9, 2016, of complications from multiple myeloma. Born April 30, 1933, in Norristown, she was a daughter of the late Irene Winters and William J. Goodfriend Sr.

She grew up in Worcester, PA., and graduated from Norristown High School in 1951 and attended Penn State University. She also previously lived in Alexandria, VA.; Monterey, CA.; Las Vegas; Cleveland, Texas; Exton, Ardmore, and Gap. She was married 61 years to Ronald L. Harper, of Strasburg.

In the 1960s, in West Chester, she was president of the PTA in the local elementary school. She won awards and recognition for her volunteer work on racial tolerance and aiding families in poverty. She was active in the West Chester Unitarian-Universalist Church.

In the mid-1970s, as a mother of three school-age children, she returned to college to finish her education. A woman doing so was sufficiently unusual then that the local newspaper wrote an article about it.

She enrolled at Rosemont College and graduated there in 1976, then continued her education at Bryn Mawr College, graduating in 1978 with an MSS in social work.

She was employed as a social worker in health care in Philadelphia and suburbs from 1978 to 1989 and in Lancaster County from 1989, retiring in 1998 as director of Social Services at Ephrata Community Hospital.

She was a member of Strasburg Heritage Society and initiated the Strasburg Garden Tour, which she chaired for five years. She also served on the Strasburg Architectural Review Board for six years and developed an informational brochure which is given to people who own property in the historic district.

She was a member of Willow Street United Church of Christ, where she was active in leadership roles.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by three children: Douglas Robert Harper (Amy Biel Harper) of Lancaster, David Ronald Harper (Caroline Cousin Harper) of Columbia, S.C., and Megan Nancy Harper (Thomas Maroon) of Philadelphia. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Luke Hamilton Harper, Grace Harper Maroon, Lillian Louise Harper, Nancy Rose Maroon, and Eleanor McClain Pulliam. She will also be missed by nieces and nephews.

She enjoyed reading, visits from neighbors, catalogue shopping, and her dogs. Her vacation homes in Summit View (New Milford) and Cape May and Stone Harbor at the shore always were open to family. In her later years she spent part of the winter in Hilton Head, S.C.

She was preceded in death by a brother, William Goodfriend Jr., and a sister, Irene Brader.
