Barbara Louise Potter was born in Watonga, Oklahoma on September 3, 1937, to Harold and Mildred (West) Porter. Barbara lived the majority of her childhood in Fay, Oklahoma with her siblings Carolee, Vinita, Harold (Sonny) and Victor. She graduated from Thomas High School, where she met and married the love of her life, A.L. Potter.
Barbara and A.L. married and worked for the Mistletoe Express and the Rock Island Railroad. A.L. worked on the bridge gang, while Barbara loved cooking for the crew. In 1959, they moved to Crystal City, Texas, where A.L. managed a truck farm and cattle business.
Thomas, Oklahoma was home to Barbara and A.L. In 1960, they moved to Thomas to build their life and raise their children on the farm. A.L. worked in the farming and cattle business and Barbara would take meals to the field to feed the workers. Barbara was a wonderful wife and mother and she loved to cook for the community. A true hostess, Barbara would prepare meals for the harvesters and the whole family would spend the evenings playing card games with them. When the Railroad Air Force train came through Thomas, Barbara honored them with home-cooked meals and hospitality. Barbara loved cooking so much that A.L. built her the Thomas Café, branded “A.L.”, in a gold embossed brick. She managed the Thomas Café for several years. It was a great gathering place in the community.
Barbara was more than a daughter, wife, mother, cook and hostess. She explored her interest in the health care industry at the Thomas Nursing Home and worked part-time as an EMT. As a widow, she went to nursing school and became an LPN. She worked for the VA in Clinton, Duncan Regional Hospital, Deaconess Hospital, Edmond Specialty Hospital and Home Health Care. She loved making fleece blankets to comfort her patients.
After retirement, Barbara lived life in Edmond, Oklahoma, enjoying gardening and bird watching. Barbara loved playing the piano, singing church hymns, and playing Canasta long into the night. Dinner Days at her church were always something she enjoyed. Her greatest love was of her family, teaching grandchildren how to cook and welcoming her twenty-two great-grandchildren into this world. Barbara left this life on August 20, 2020, to join her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

She is survived by her son Bob and his three children, Allison, Meredith and Michael; her daughter, Donna and her four children, Kristi, Juli, James (Jimmy) and Audra; her daughter Janet and her three children, Summer, Jessica and Micah; and her son, Bruce and his three children, Bryan, Braden and LaCee. Between her grandchildren, Barbara was blessed by her twenty-two great-grandchildren and was never happier than when they came to spend the night, play, or made her a something special that was just for her.
A public visitation will be held on Monday, August 24 at Matthews Funeral Home from 2:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. with family receiving friends from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Services will be held at Church of The First Born 1501 N. Purdue Ave, Oklahoma City, OK on Tuesday, August 25 at 10:00 A.M. Interment will follow at 2:00 P.M. at Mound Valley Cemetery in Thomas, OK.
