Mary Ellen Bowman Obit

Mary Ellen Bowman was born Jun 5, 1886 in Owsley Co., Ky., the daughter of Henry Bowman (A veteran of the Civil War) & Elizabeth McVey. She was married to a distant cousin, John B. Bowman (the son of Robert Bowman & Dicie Jane Peters) on 10 Dec., 1903 at Endee, Ky. To this union there were born
seven daughters, Lizzie Jane (Floyd) Reynolds, Beatrice (Lee) Callahan, Cliffie (Floyd) Becknell, Bessie, (Ivan) Spence, Lillian (Estill) Peters, Emma (Robert) Brewer & Ernestine (Lee) Peters. She spent her life as a homemaker & was actively involved as a member of the New Hope Baptist Church.
She was a charter member & frequent officer of the Susan Chapter, No. 106, Order of The Eastern Star & was the recipient of her 50 year pin on 18 Aug. 1959 in a special program of recognition at the chapter hall at Traveler's Rest. She was the subject of a short story in the book, Tales from Sturgeon Creek, by her grandson who said, Grannie Bowman was a grandmother. I say this not to be redundant, but rather to express in the grandest way possible that she possessed all those qualities which we so often assign to grandmothers. She loved her children with the love of a mother, but she loved her grandchildren with all the love that God could possibly place within one human heart…. became their advocate with disgruntled parents; spoiled them with sweets; shared in their hidden secrets & steadfastly protected them from the harshness of mountain life.
On Sunday afternoons, Grannie Bowman would sit in that old homemade rocking chair, wearing her ever present bonnet & apron, & would laugh at the childish mischief & actions of her grandchildren as they played before her eyes. When one of "her" darlings became unruly & received a word of admonishment from their parents, Grannie would speak, "Let that youngin' be. A youngin' is a youngin' but once in life, so let that youngin' be a youngin' an' enjoy it."
The parent would obey, without any semblance of question, the decree of this kindly matron of grandchildren. She died 26 Feb., 1965 at her family home at Endee, Ky.
