Donald E. Schwartz, 90, of Altamont died at 6:35 a.m. Wednesday, June 24, 2020 at Lutheran Care Center, Altamont.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 29, 2020 at the First United Methodist Church, Altamont with Rev. Paige Campbell officiating. Visitation will be for one hour prior to service time. Burial will follow at Mason Cemetery, Mason, IL. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, Altamont. Gieseking Funeral Home, Altamont is assisting with arrangements. COVID-19 protocol including face covering and social distancing will be required.
Donald Edward Schwartz was born on Friday, February 21, 1930 in Cincinnati, Ohio to Albert Jacob and Ada Elizabeth (Ismael) Schwartz. He married Jean Taylor and she preceded him in death in 2002. He then married Geraldine (Norris) Helm on September 24, 2003.
He served in the US Army and was a retired registered nurse having been employed with the State of California for 32 years. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Altamont, Altamont Masonic Lodge #533, Elks Lodge, Grobengieser-Fischer American Legion Post #512, Altamont, and the American Legion in Harlingen, TX.
Don was an accomplished vocalist and musician and loved to travel. He lived in many places around the country before finally settling in Altamont. For the last three years of his life he was a resident of Lutheran Care Center, with diminished physical and mental skills.
He is survived by his wife, Geraldine Schwartz of Altamont; step sons, Mark Helm of Denver, CO and Brian Helm of Colorado Springs, CO; seven step grandchildren and three step-great grandchildren.
Don was preceded in death by his stepson, Dennis Helm and step grandson, Matthew Helm.
