Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General, Wyoming Territorial Governor. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he was commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant in the 1st Ohio Volunteer Infantry, a three-months service regiment. Promoted to Major, US Volunteers, he then served as an Assistant Adjutant General on the staff of Major General Alexander McCook. Afterwards, he was made a Lieutenant Colonel, and finished out his services as an Assistant Adjutant General on the staff of Major General John McA. Schofield. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "courage in the field, and marked ability and fidelity". He served as Governor of Wyoming Territory from 1869 to 1875, and Campbell County, Wyoming is named for him.
