Francis enrolled in Co. B, 91st Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, on 8 Aug 1862 at Gallipolis, Ohio for three years. He was 32 years of age. His description reported him to be 5'-10" tall, light complexion, dark hair and gray eyes. Francis was wounded by a bursting shell at the Battle of Lynchburg, Va. on 17 Jun 1864. The shell tore the knapsack from his back and his gun from his hands, leaving him insensible on the ground. The concussion of the shell injured his back and shoulder. He reported in his pension application that he was not treated at a hospital, but was treated by the Regimental Surgeon as he stayed with his Company, with great difficulty, as they retreated to Charleston in the Kanawha Valley.
These injuries and resulting rheumatism were the basis for his application for an Invalid Class pension in 1887. He claimed 75% disability so far as being able to do manual labor. He was a resident of Eagle Mills, Vinton Co., Ohio at the time of filing. Francis had been mustered out with his Company at Cumberland, Md on 24 Jun 1865.
Francis Marion Ralph was a Corporal in Company B, 91st Volunteer Infantry. His Pension papers say that he received an injury to his back when he was struck by a shell at Lynchburg, VA. about June 17 1864. His pension papers describe him as being 5ft 10in tall with light complexion, grey eyes and dark hair.
From an affidavit in Francis' pension file by Cyrenius A. Wilcox in 1898, it appears that Francis and Delilah lived near Cyrenius in or near Rowlesville, Gallia Co.- "until 1868, at which time they removed from the neighborhood". It is probable that Francis moved to Vinton County at that time.
