Donald Lind Blake of Barrackville, West Virginia, passed away peacefully at age 59 on Thursday, August 13, 2020 after a short battle with lung cancer. Born January 25, 1961, in Takoma Park, Maryland, he was the son Raymond William Blake and the late Audrey Jean Blake of Berkeley Springs, WV.
He is survived by a sister, Jean Marie Matchner (Frank) of Monrovia, MD; two brothers, Ronald Lee Blake (Debbie) of Edgewater, MD, and Lindley Earl Blake (Linda) of St. Cloud, FL. Don is also survived by four nieces, three nephews, eight great nieces, six great nephews, and his "adopted family", the Thompsons of Fairmont, WV, and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Don was raised in Glenn Dale, Maryland. After he graduated from DuVal High School in 1978, he became a welder at American Iron Works. He worked as a welder for several years, after which he moved to North Beach, MD, where he lived for several years. In December 1997, Don was hospitalized and remained in a coma for many days. He was not expected to survive, but he did. As a result, he joined AA and remained sober to his last days. He was most proud of this accomplishment. Once he fully recovered, he moved to Fairmont, WV; and soon thereafter moved to Barrackville, WV, where he resided for 23 years. He worked doing home construction and renovation and handyman services until he received his cancer diagnosis.
Don loved his family. He helped his mother and father on their own farm as he was able and was a good caregiver for his mother and support for his father in her final days. He loved when family came to visit and seeing his extended family at the annual family reunion.
Don had a huge sense of humor and loved to tell a good or really bad joke to anyone, family, friends, or the clerk at the check-out counter. He was fearless in his work and sometimes required a hospital stay or stitches. He loved being outdoors, hunting, fishing, and gardening. He enjoyed working with his hands and restored his own 100-year-old home and that of many others in and around Barrackville. He had a passion for collecting antiques and finding a good deal on anything. He loved all colors. He did things his way. He was a character.
Don made many life-long friends in his close-knit community. He appreciated that they supported and cared for him enough to check in with him regularly as needed. His family is most grateful for the love and concern they have given him through the years and especially during the past several months.
Services will be held at Burnside Funeral Home in Bridgeport, WV, Monday, August 17, 2020, viewing at 11 a.m. followed by his funeral service at 12 noon. Due to Covid-19, social distancing and masks will be required.
